SHOOT! WHEN IS LENT?
Lent is quickly approaching (March 5th)! Some of you are excited to get your spiritual house in order, and some of you just remembered that Ash Wednesday is next week. Regardless, it’s on its way. Are you ready? Are you prepared? You know the Catholic question of the week will be, “What are you going to DO for Lent?”
WHAT'S THE POINT?
I’m a HUGE fan of sacrifice. In my experience, sacrifice has been a surefire way to significantly improve your relationship with Christ. Some of my Lenten sacrifices have proven to be the most fruitful spiritual experiences of my life. However, I think we can get trapped and fixated on what we’re sacrificing, instead of knowing and seeking who we’re sacrificing for. Christ is easy to forget in this whole process. If our faith is about seeking a deep and personal relationship with Christ (which it is!), I urge you (and me!) to take a step back and ask, “What can I DO to become closer to Christ”, and not (let’s be honest), “How can I lose a few pounds?”
WHAT ABOUT PRAYER?
Lent is popularly known for its “giving something up” attitude, but what if we actively and intentionally did something to get closer to Jesus? It’s always been odd to me that we give up soda, sweets, salt, and finally decide to go for a run, but not PRAY everyday. We “give up” everything under the sun, but fail to foster the most important relationship we have. I know sacrifice can help us get closer, but if we fail to pray everyday we’re missing the whole point of what it is we’re sacrificing and preparing for. Every Lent ends with Easter - the Resurrection. Because of it, you can encounter Christ here and now! He is in the chapel, your house, your car, your office cubicle, waiting for YOU to get to know HIM, and HIM get to know YOU. This Lent, I urge you to sacrifice your time and commit to praying everyday. It’ll rock your Lenten world.
